Choir

St. Paul’s choir has been working with its present Director of Music, Peter Orme, since the fall of 2005. In that time, it has established a pattern of singing at least one anthem each week as well as leading the regular service music. In addition, the choir sings at all the major services in Holy Week, at the Festival of Lessons and Carols just before Christmas, and at the Christmas “Midnight” Eucharist. The music comes from the wide-ranging traditional Anglican repertoire – from Plainsong to more contemporary composers like Benjamin Britten, Kenneth Leighton, and John Rutter. When all are present, the choir numbers around 20 people. It is a mixed-ability group, in that not everyone reads music fluently, so the main prerequisites are an ability to sing in tune and a commitment to learn. We would particularly like to hear from men who are interested in singing either bass or tenor, but altos and sopranos are also most welcome. Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., on Sunday mornings at 9.45 a.m., and there are usually “reading days” held on a Saturday early in September and January, which help to get a head start on the music for the new term.
